Many Turn To Religion For Comfort
This editorial was published in 2001 not long after the September 11th attacks. The publisher was Boston Globe. The editorial seems credible because they actually quote people who they talked to, so it has a primary source.
1. People of many different religions turned to faith more immediately after the Sept. 11th attacks.
2. Elizabeth Englander, an associate professor of psychology at Bridgewater State College, says that a return to faith is predictable in this situation.
3. One pastor compared the 9/11 attacks to something like a highschooler getting into a car crash and reminding everyone of their own mortality.
4. Many of the new church goers also said that they were trying to make sense of what happened.
5. Rev. Peter Gomes said that religion was designed to help people deal with anxiety.
6. People tend to turn to faith when their world is badly shaken and they are dealing with fear, anxiety, uncertainty, and hopelessness.
7. This is actually exactly what I expected.
1. So if people are drawn to faith in times of difficulty, are people less like to be religious in areas where there is more prosperity?
2. As our society and the world changes, are people more likely to lose faith or become more religious?

ReplyDeleteYou made a good point that people use religion for comfort. I agree because you strongly back it up by talking about the September 11th attacks in 2001, and how many people turned to their faith after that.
ReplyDeleteThis post made me realize why people become religious. It made me realize this because you wrote about how people use religion for comfort. A point about this that you may want to think about is what religions do people turn to and why do they choose them. You may want to think about this because it can help you understand the differences and similarities among different religions.
ReplyDeleteI believe you are correct that people tend to look to whatever their religious beliefs may be in times of difficulty but many also find comfort from maintaining a connection to a "higher power" at all times.
ReplyDeleteIt might be interesting to explore that particular question in greater detail. It would also be interesting to explore it with different age groups of people to help understand if there is a link between age and belief.
You've asked good questions.
